Motorcycle Tyres – Simple Guide
Your tyres are the only things connecting your bike to the road. The right ones make a big difference to grip, handling, safety and how long they last.
Main Types of Motorcycle Tyres
- Sport – Maximum grip for aggressive road or track riding. Wear out faster.
- Sport-Touring – Good all-round choice for most riders. Strong grip with decent lifespan.
- Touring – Built for long distance, comfort and high mileage.
- Adventure / Dual-Sport – For mixed road and off-road use.
- Off-Road – Knobbly tyres for dirt and trails (not ideal for long road trips).
Understanding Tyre Sizes
A typical size looks like 120/70 ZR 17.
- 120 = width (mm)
- 70 = sidewall height
- 17 = rim size (inches)
Always fit the size recommended by your bike’s manufacturer.
Choosing Tyres
Match the tyre to how and where you ride:
- Daily commuting or touring → Sport-Touring or Touring
- Fast road/track days → Sport
- Adventure riding → Dual-Sport

Tyre Pressure & Care
- Check pressures when the tyres are cold.
- Use the pressures shown in your bike’s handbook (they often change when carrying a passenger or luggage).
- Inspect regularly for cuts, cracks, embedded stones and uneven wear.
- Keep an eye on tread depth and the wear indicators in the grooves.
When to Replace Tyres
Change them when:
- Tread is getting low
- Sidewalls are cracked or damaged
- Grip feels reduced
- The tyre is several years old (rubber hardens over time even if it still has tread)
Quick Safety Tips
- New tyres need a short bedding-in period — ride carefully for the first 100–200 km.
- Cold weather reduces grip, especially on performance tyres.
Looking after your tyres is one of the easiest ways to stay safer and get better performance from your motorcycle.
